Our swim collection has always been built on 2 ideas – black is the new black and reversibility. I am a devoted fan of black bikinis and therefore from the beginning, I knew our swim collection will be classic when it comes to colour. But of course with a twist. And the twist for our 10th anniversary is the nude cat pattern that can be shown off in various ways on different styles.
For this year’s swim collection we have brought back all the bestsellers and added some very special new additions. Say hello to Ilona Swimsuit and Meg & Riti Bikini Tops.
Ilona Swimsuit is the ultimate eyecatcher. Born out of playing with asymmetry, the result is feminine and bold. It hugs the body in all the right places and features familiar details like our golden suspender clip. A little bit of the logo fabric can be spotted on the shoulder making it not your average black swimsuit.
Riti Bikini Top is a classic triangle with the gold suspender details giving that extra edge. It’s reversible and practical, a must have for any Summer vacation. Keep it subtle wearing the black outside or turn it around and show off that playful cat pattern. Riti Bikini Top is fully adjustable making sure the fit is perfect.
Meg Bikini Top became alive after the Inge gown that was in our early collections. Megfeatures a hood that is as much of a fashion statement as it is a very practical detail. The hood will be there to cover you from that extra bit of sun. Meg Bikini Top features our Cat logo print lining and comes in a flattering v-neck cut.
With the launch of this year’s beach collection, we have picked the Wings Swimsuit as the next Kriss Soonik signature in our “10 years, 10 items” feature.
The Wings Swimsuit was born for the Spring/Summer 2015 collection when our first swimwear range got launched. The wings were not a new concept for us as it had been gracing our Diana Wings Velour Wrap for a few years already. As with the wrap I didn’t want the lace wings to just be hidden at home, then the swimsuit was even more perfect to flaunt in front of everyone on the beach or at the pool.
Before I ended up with wings, I played with many shapes. But the wings just stood out from all the others. The French lace wings are made completely by hand in our studio in Tallinn. Our seamstress extraordinaire Ilona has become quite a master in sculpting them over the years.
But noteworthy is also the material the swimsuit is made of. Originating from Italy, it’s really strong, stretchy and tucks everything in nicely. It’s made with UV UPF 50+ for that extra sun protection.
Wings Swimsuit is the perfect Kriss Soonik piece. It’s classic yet cool, it celebrates the female form and delivers you the unexpected.
Our bestsellers this summer are definitely our swimsuits – Splash! & Wings. Both are equally incredible and oh so cool for very different reasons. Splash! is a bit more rock-n-roll and the Wings swimsuit is all about that quiet elegance.
Now that the long awaited summer is finally here, it’s the perfect time to share how our team is planning to spend their vacation.
DAYS ON THE BEACH
Nothing beats those long lazy days by the seaside. We all need a bit of vitamin sea. Be it just enjoying the sunshine or conquering the waves on a surfboard, What’s for sure, we’ll all be rocking some Kriss Soonik beachwear!
CURLING UP WITH A GOOD BOOK
The best way to relax and gather inspiration. Our current favourite is Shoe Dog By Phil Knight. It’s a fascinating read about the journey of a CEO. It’s easy to forget that even a company like Nike was once a start-up. The book offers valuable insight into the highs and lows of running a business. If fashion books are more your thing, Business of Fashion has just come out with their annual summer reading list
It has become a summer tradition to visit couple of (music) festivals each year. The music, the friends, the atmosphere! And there’s also the exciting part of coming up with cool festival outfits! This time we’re all thrilled about the Citadel Festival in London.
Even though it’s freezing cold in London (and all over Europe for that matter) we are definitely feeling the onset of summer. At least the days are getting longer and the sun is out more than usual! This is the perfect time to start thinking about beachwear for the summer.
The Swim range is a collection of simple styles with quirky features, that make them specifically “us”. Whether it is the wings on the back of a swimsuit, a suspender clip on a bra strap or a removable belt.
The range is limited edition and available only on our website 😉
The all black swim range is perfect for mixing and matching. Why black? Because I feel that black is also one of the coolest colours on the beach. It works from when you first get to the seaside feeling naked and scared, to when you have a nice shimmering tan and feel 100 times more confident. It´s safe yet sexy.
In addition to all the favourites, we have added a brand new Wings Swimsuit to the range. The chic sporty swimsuit comes in very limited quantities and is only available to our website customers.
Last season during The Lingerie Collective (TLC) Kelly (Isaac, the founder of TLC) asked me to talk to a new designer. “Kriss, do you remember your first season and how you hid behind your rail because you were afraid to talk to buyers? Why don’t you share your story with Lucy how you conquered that fear and became this ray of light chatting to everyone with such ease.”
I remember my first season at TLC too well. It was my debut trade show, so I had no idea what to expect. It was daunting to be among all these awesome brands. I was self-confident but didn’t really have any selling skills. After all, I am a quiet Estonian, so selling doesn’t really come naturally to me. But what TLC has given me is more than just a trade show. TLC has helped me build our brand into what it is today.
So when the opportunity knocked to visit the SS14 TLC show as not an exhibitor but as a reporter for Nineteen13, I had to grab that. And did I feel any different visiting the show? No. It has always felt more like a family reunion rather than hard work and this time wasn’t different.
What I like about TLC is that it is intimate, having direct access talking to designers themselves, not weird old sleazy sales guys. And the brand new venue at The Chiltern Studios in the heart of Marylebone was just perfect. Newcomers and established brands side by side, showing their gorgeous SS14 collections.
My highlights included Fräulein Kink’s stunning new range of red harnesses and accessories, newcomer All Undone with their strong imagery of large cup-sized lingerie and Sumarie, the London-based swimwear brand. There has definitely been a rise in shapewear and swimwear lines over the last few seasons. Even the lovely Beautiful Bottoms girls have launched their first swim line with their signature pattens.
There were splashes of colour and summery pastels, bright, bold patterns and strong monochrome looks.
TLC event manager Sophie Metchick confirmed visitors from Harvey Nichols, ASOS, Net-a-Porter to niche boutiques Dolci Follie, Coco de Mer and Petits Bisou in the UK. But this season also saw a lot of overseas buyers visit the show including Faire Frou Frou from the US, Baby likes to Pony from Australia and Le Macaron from China. So sounds to me like the London show is at its top form and going strong. Excited to see what the TLC show in New York in August will bring.
But what did I tell Lucy that day? “Open your eyes, look around, observe, and take it all in.”
For me growing up next to such iconic brands as Lascivious, Made by Niki, Ell & Cee, was an experience that money cannot buy. If you have a unique vision, don’t copy anyone and do your own thing, these brands will share all their selling tips and inspire you to keep on doing what you love no matter what. You just have to let your passion show. And then you’ll get the orders.
You can see Kriss Soonik Loungerie SS14 5th Birthday collection at The Lingerie Collective New York show 4th-6th August at Studio 320, 320 West 37th St, New York 10018. Book an appointment firstname.lastname@example.org.
