Top 5 of 2020

Every year I pick the 5 most memorable moments of the year. Even though the year 2020 has been weird and surreal in so many ways, there are so many things to be grateful for. So here we go!

Geisha Valentine’s

Our Valentine´s day collaboration with Finnish chocolate brand Geisha was definitely one of my favourites of the year. The launch event of the campaign was the first and last major event in our Tallinn Studio Store this year. Thank god we really made the most of it! The campaign featuring our special mini-collection in pink velour and chocolate brown lace graced many shopping malls and TV channels prior to the special day. Thanks so much Fazer Estonia for choosing us for this campaign!

TFW fashion show

We presented our new AW20 collection at virtual Tallinn Fashion Week in October. Like all of you, I wasn´t able to attend the show, which made the situation quite strange. After all, it was my show but I as well watched it online. So I´d like to thank my amazing team – models Merilin, Ellu, Aurelia, make-up artist Erle and assistant Susanna. But most of all Johanna – without you I would have been nothing this year! Thanks for bringing the show alive better than I would have!

Diana Wings Wrap

The reason we survived this tricky year was the need for comforting comfy stuff and so our loungewear started flying off the virtual shelves. The hero product of the year was hands down our Diana Wings Wrap. Alongside our Getter Wings Wrap and Wings Hoody, the trio rocked our world and helped us through the roughest of times. They have been our best-selling products for awhile but this year was designed for them.

Abstracat Tulle

Bringing new fabrics to our collections is the most exciting and nerve-wrecking thing for me. This Autumn we introduced a new tulle to the collections called Abstracat. The pattern on the soft tulle looks like abstract splashes of velvet paint with our Cat logo and KS initials hidden in there. And then my ultimate favourite product became alive – Abstracat Jacket. The combination of velour and tulle in just the right quantities, wearing it with a pair of jeans and t-shirt is my go to look for a long time!

Our customers

Like so many other brands when lockdown hit I was not sure how we´ll survive. For a moment it really seemed like the end of the world. Maybe it’s stretching it a bit but it was definitely the end of the world as I knew it. No more easy travels to Tokyo or New York, my global world fell apart with a blink of an eye. I can´t explain how much I miss it! But when everything got really bad, our customer came to support us. I can´t explain how grateful I am for our community, the wonderful people who are willing to spend their hard-earned cash on our products. I can only promise to bring you even more exciting stuff in the year 2021 and make you smile with our designs.
Thank you! ❤️

Kriss xx

AUGUST TOP 5: Summer fun

For this month’s Top 5 post, we’ve put together our top things to do (and what to wear for them ;)) during summer holidays and weekends.

1. FESTIVALS

Summer is the time for open-air fun and music – throw on a Fishnet Cover-Up and you’re ready to rock.

2. WEDDINGS

Hopefully you’ll get to go to a wedding or two this summer. These are always the loveliest events, with emotion, nostalgia, lots of beautiful people and even more fun!

3. URBAN PICNIC

If you don’t manage to escape the city during the weekend, why not have a picnic in the park? Bring food, a bit of bubbly and wear summer’s favourite colour – white.

4. ROOFTOP PARTY

A glamorous night out on a rooftop just calls for some sparkle – why not leave the Elve Bra with pearl details peeking out from your outfit. The perfect way to nail underwear as outerwear.

5. CITY TRIP

The perfect way to make the most of your (long) weekend off is to hop on a plane to a nearby city and spend the time exploring. Change into the versatile Rebecca Body, grab a map and make new memories 🙂

Kriss’s Top 5 – June

This June we’ve taken to nostalgia and are exploring our favourite (female) characters from cult movies. Controversial and mysterious, they leave no-one indifferent and are an endless source of inspiration.

Charlotte (Uma Thurman) – Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
Everyone remembers the cult scene where Uma Thurman is dancing with Travolta: “Isn’t it more fun when you don’t have permission?”. Mischievous, she likes danger and adrenaline and is not afraid to confront anyone to get what she wants.
Pictures14
Lux Lisbon (Kirsten Dunst) – Virgin Suicides (Sofia Coppola, 1999)
This iconic teen movie paved the way for Kirsten Dunst’s rise to stardom playing the anti-heroine Lux Lisbon. Lux is a dreamer – the more the world tries to contain her, the bigger she dreams. Seductive and self-confident, she attracts every boy she wants hoping it will lead her to happiness eventually.
Pictures15
Elvira Hancock (Michelle Pfeiffer) – Scarface (Brian de Palma, 1983)
The slip dress worn by Elvira Hancock (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a fashion reference that keeps on giving. The best word to describe her is Elegance, she is a true lady. And she is the kind that will not be considered only as a housewife or an accessory – she is the main act.
Pictures16
Enid (Thora Birch) – Ghost World (Terry Zwigoff, 2002)
Thora Birch delivers an incredible performance playing Enid. She is the total opposite of a socialite, thinks out of the box and is not afraid to voice her opinions. Enid stays true to herself and is willing to it to the whole world if need be.
Pictures17
Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson)  – Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola, 2003)
Another movie by Sofia Coppola, another charming fair-haired dreamer as the female lead. The audience is seduced by the emphasized attitude of loneliness surrounding Charlotte. Watching Lost in Translation will transport you to another universe filled with melancholia and nostalgia. It serves as a good reminder to appreciate the action and emotion we have in our daily lives.

Kriss’s Top 5 – February

Read: Biography of Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne has been a role model and an inspiration for me since I can remember, so I jumped at the chance to get an insider look at her life when her biography was published. As fate would have it, I happened to be on the same train with Vivienne when coming back from Salon de la Lingerie in Paris and could give my warmest regards to her in person. One more thing crossed off the bucket list!

Activity: Winter fun on the slopes

February is the height of winter and a great time to hit the slopes. After all, an active vacation is my favourite kind of vacation. I’m looking forward to a long weekend in the Alps to enjoy snowboarding, magnificent views over the mountains and a roaring fire in the evening.

2

Event: London Fashion Week, AW16

This LFW we were rooting for a fellow Estonian – Roberta Einer. She’s a talented upcoming womenswear designer who just presented her second collection at London Fashion Week. Her Dreams & Nightmares presentation got us inspired and completely in awe.

Theme: Romance

February is the month of romance (Valentines!) and beautiful lingerie gets the spotlight. The fact that Valentines is over for this year doesn’t mean that we’re done with romance. Surprise your significant other with some flowers/chocolate/cheeky knickers out of the blue and keep the flame burning 😉

Birthday: Estonia 98

24th of February is the Independence Day of Estonia and this year my homeland turns 98. Me and my husband are honoured to be invited to the celebration ceremonies this year, so stay tuned for some pictures from the red carpet. Happy birthday and here’s to many more years!

January Top 5 – Best Sales

January is one of the biggest end-of-season sale months. But with so much to choose from, everyone needs a bit of guidance where to spend their hard-earned money. So for our January Top 5 Kriss has put together a list of our favourite online stores to shop during sales.

Kenzo – The cool French/Japanese label gets quite affordable during sale time, though they almost never discount their famous Tiger range.

kenzo

Luisa Via Roma – The legendary luxury e-tailer needs no introduction. Great for hunting down that designer piece you couldn’t afford during the season.

luisaviaroma

Kriss Soonik – We have just added the Autumn/Winter 2015 Disco line to the sale and lots of new sizes on past seasons items. Most of these items are only available during sale time, so get yours before they sell out forever.

KS

Maje – Romantic and feminine designs with that special touch of French cool. Loving the knitwear range!

maje

Maison Kitsuné – Quirky and cool, just the way we like it!

Kriss’s Top 5 in 2015

Looking back at 2015. Here´s Kriss´s top 5 most memorable events of the year.

SIL

Paris Lingerie Trade show
A great kick off to 2015 was the Salon International de la Lingerie trade show in January. A must for all lingerie brands and buyers, this show has the best of the best. It’s not only great to see all the buyers from around the world but also to catch up with all the other designers and brands.
Kriss Soonik will be returning to Paris 23rd-25th January. You can find us at booth G89.

Isetan

Isetan Lingerie Pop-up & Cannabis Event in Tokyo
Tokyo was definitely the busiest place for us this year. We had many different events in Japan, the most memorable being the Cannabis Cherry Blossom event in March, where I made my DJ debut, and our pop-up shop at Tokyo’s most prestigious department store – Isetan.

2016 looks to be even busier there. And we might also get outside of Tokyo!

secret-brunch

Secret Brunch Fashion Show in London
We don’t host fashion shows very often but this Halloween we teamed up with Secret Brunch and threw a supersexy show. Our gorgeous catwomen were accompanied by a huge daytime performance and party that’s hard to forget. I hope we´ll get to do something similar in 2016.

Christmas Campaign
What happens when you put 5 grown up women in a room with foil balloons? The best day ever, that´s what! One of the most amazing photoshoots we´ve ever done! I would like to thank the entire team – photographer Sandra Palm, make-up and hair stylist Nele Pandis, stylist Johanna Eenmaa, and of course the gorgeous model Mari-Liis Roots. I am sure this team will do more memorable work in the coming year.

Christmas Press Event and Live Window in Tallinn
Beginning of December we hosted a small press event at our Estonian stockist Naughty Beauty (Ulakas Kaunitar in Estonian). Completely unplanned we asked 2 of our gorgeous models to stand in the window for some photos – next moment we were stopping traffic outside and the Estonian press was full of images of these beauties. Quite a cool end to the year! Spontaneity rocks!

Here´s to an exciting 2016!

Kriss´s Top 5 – October

Visit: Louis Vuitton Series 3 Exhibition in London

The French luxury brand Louis Vuitton has again outdone itself by offering a modern and unexpected reinterpretation of a fashion show. It was great to peek into the world of head designer Nicolas Ghesquière and discover his inspirations for the collection. The exhibition is on until 18th of October so there’s still time to visit if you haven’t already.

Attend: Tallinn Fashion Week

I can´t believe it´s been already 1 year since we won the Fashion Designer of the Year Award Golden Needle (Kuldnõel) at Tallinn Fashion Week. This year I´ll be rooting for other designers and taking a break from hosting a fashion show but that doesn´t mean it will be a month without shows…

Indulge: Secret Brunch

On the 24th October the Secret Temple will open its doors in Central London to more than 1000 guests for an epic daytime party. One of the highlights of the day will be the Kriss Soonik fashion show. Follow us on Instagram and keep an eye on our blog for some top secret content and backstage pictures from the event.

Listen: Michelle Obama´s Spotify Playlist

In honour of International Day of the Girl, the First Lady has shared her first-ever Spotify playlist. With Beyoncé, TLC & Lauryn Hill, it´s easy to top our office music selection.

Lust: Hay

It is no secret that I am completely obsessed with stationery. I have at least 3 notebooks at all times – you need different sizes for different bags, right? So it comes as no surprise that the Danish brand Hay has just become my latest obsession. They make everything from stationery to furniture, so there´s a lot to covet.

Kriss´s Top 5 – September

Wear: Cosy knits
Autumn is around the corner and once again I have become obsessed with knitwear. Not only does it show in our new collection but it shows in every aspect of my wardrobe. My Summer tank tops have all been switched to warm cardis with comfy turtlenecks. Bring on the cold weather. I dare you!

Read: Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso
The founder of fashion e-tailer Nasty Gal has written a book that´s both her life story and a guide to running a business. I can´t say that everything about this book was perfect but I feel there should be more books like this. The book offers a sassy manifesto for ambitious young female entrepreneurs which can be really empowering. Especially in times of uncertainty.

Visit: London Fashion Week
Rock ´n´ roll all the way. Fashion week madness always brightens up the city. I love the buzz it creates. If you´ve forgotten that fashion is exciting and fun, then LFW is there to remind you that.

Travel: Tallinn-London-Paris-Tokyo
Just back from Tallinn, off to Paris and then to Tokyo – a typical busy September. With such travels, the most important thing is to pack right but I am still learning how to do that. I love pieces that are multifunctional, things that can easily be transformed from daywear to partywear. Will keep you posted how it goes in one of the future posts.

Shoe obsession: Camilla Elphick
The Camilla Elphick Bugs Bunny Pez shoes are one of my favourite fashion finds of the year so far. Big love.

Kriss´s Top 5 – August

London summer weather has been a tiny bit miserable this year. So to keep our mood up at the Kriss Soonik headquarters, we listen to the best summer grooves. And we try to stay positive – there´s still a lot of official summertime ahead of us. Fingers crossed.

Music

Instead of the usual monthly top 5, here´s the top 10 of our office favourite hits that we´ll still have on repeat this month.

Kriss’s Top 5 – July

Read: Ayn Rand The Fountainhead
It has been on our bookshelf for a very long time but the 600 plus pages haven’t really been inviting. But now I feel that I am ready to read this modern classic. 100 down, 500 to go. So far, so good!

Listen: Zwette feat Molly – Rush
While I was driving my car in Estonia this song kept coming on. It´s such a mellow, summery, beach lounging song. At first I wasn’t sure if I liked it but after a couple of times, I was certain it was a hit for me. Can’t be found on Spotify. Mystery.

Vacation: Spain
A couple of days in sunny Mallorca won’t hurt anyone, right? Look forward to lying on the beach, eating tasty fresh food, drinking good wine and doing absolutely nothing else. Bliss.

Desktop243

Activity: Ping Pong
While waiting in the queue for our turn to play tennis, we have picked up ping pong. The ping pong tables are always empty. At a beginner´s level it´s not that physical as tennis but still gets your body moving and is a lot of fun!

Desktop245

Drink: Smoothie
With the weather getting warmer, I have become much healthier with my food. I also finally got a blender and here’s one of my favourite smoothies to make. It includes: Avocado, Spinach, Banana, Almond Milk. It’s not very sweet but full of health. Yummy!
